Making Time For Your Dreams

Time is free, but it's priceless. You can't own it, but you can use it. You can't keep it, but you can spend it. Once you've lost it you can never get it back. ~Harvey MacKay

How do you make sure that you keep your aspirations and dreams for the future alive while you have a bunch of screaming priorities in your everyday life that you're trying to juggle?

Also, how can you balance your need for everyday peace while making progress towards your future?

One suggestion is:  Spend one hour a day on your dream.

Easier said than done, I know.  Yet, it is possible.

A trick I’ve found useful is to give yourself a time limit on your dreaming.   The key is:  you definitely don’t go under that time limit, but you also don’t go over it either.

You know how it feels when you start something you either feel inspired or you don’t.

If you feel inspired you spend more time getting the task done and really get into it.  If you aren’t feeling inspired you most likely bail and go onto something else that feels more interesting.

Yet, when you make a commitment to yourself to get something done within a set time limit  - regardless of how you FEEL - well that changes everything.

Just think about when you commit to a new exercise regime.  The hardest part is getting out the door or getting into the door of the gym.  Once you’re there, you’ll stay there and most likely stay for the time you committed.

The same is true for your dreams.   You need to get practical and commit.  But just like with a new exercise regime, you don’t want to overextend yourself  - or else you’ll burn-out never to return again.

To help give you some more context to what how powerful this simple method is, here are some tips to set some time aside and start taking action on what have felt like day or pipe dreams up to this point:

Tip #1:  Keep a journal or notebook with you at all times:  This is to be utilized to help you gain clarity and ideas on what is calling to you.  What is this secret dream asking of you?  What is it that if you had the time, you would love to be working on?

Tip #2:  Utilize Time Blocking:  Time blocking is a concept where you allot a specific block of time and you focus on one area of focus.  This isn't a specific task but a bigger focus  - a broader category.  You can call whatever you like - such as:  Dream Time, Creative Pursuits, whatever you wish.   Again carving out an hour a week on your calendar will do wonders.  Remember what doesn't get scheduled doesn't get done.  Make an appointment with yourself and keep it!

Tip #3:  Do What You Can Within The Time You Allot: This is the key to pursuing your passions and utilizing the time blocking concept.  When you sit down during that allotted time, ideas will come to you. You don’t need to know what you’re going to work on or have an agenda.  Just sit down and begin thinking about your dream.  What are your first steps?  Write them down.  You’ll begin to notice how focused you feel knowing that you only have an hour and you’ll find yourself giving it your best.  Ideas will come.  You’ll start making progress.  You’ll start being productive and then you’ll look forward to more Dream Time.

Remember, don’t go over (or under) the allotted time and you’ll be amazed at how productive you feel and how much you get done!  You deserve to carve out time for your secret heart’s desires.

As always the choice is yours.  Choose what you deserve.
